Import Regulation of Vehicles in Chile :


For Used vehicles

Importer must be of Chilean nationality, having remained abroad for over one year without dissolution of continuity. The duties to be paid vary according to the capacity of the motor (in cc).


For New vehicles

Subject  to the authorization of the Central Bank ( Banco Central).

Various documents are required to import the new vehicle, please contact your agent for further details.


Necessary Documents for Import a Vehicle

  • Original Endorsed OBL
  • Vehicle’s identification certificate purchase invoice
  • Ownership certificate
  • International Police certificate
  • Final cost certificate
  • Internal taxes
  • Passport

Temporary Importing Vehicles

  • Foreign tourists who enter the country through customs at border posts from Argentina must fill in a form for the temporary departure and entry of vehicles.
  • Tourists entering the country through border posts from Peru and Bolivia will be given a form at customs called Temporary Import
  • Document, which is required to temporary import a vehicle into the country.
  • Proof of tourist status must be given to the International Police Service and valid documents for the vehicle must be shown.
  • If the driver is not the owner, he must also produce an authorization, signed before a notary public and stamped by the Chilean consul in the country.
  • The temporary import of vehicles into Chile is valid for only 90 days , even if the tourist obtains an extension of his Tourist Visa.
  • If the vehicle remains in Chile for a longer period, it will be treated as illegal, according to Chilean customs regulations.

VAT:

Imports are subject to the same 19% IVA (value added tax) rate as domestic goods; however importers can recover this amount as a credit against the total amount of IVA collected through local sales. In the end, the final user or consumer pays the IVA. It is never incumbent on the exporter to pay the IVA. Goods exported from Chile are IVA exempt.
