The Port of Arica
The Port of Arica is on the Pacific coast of northern Chile only 18 kilometers south of the country’s border with Peru. Lying at the base of the cliffs of El Morro, the sand dunes of the Atacama Desert fringe the south part of the city.
The Port of Arica is an important transportation hub for the region. Located on the Pan-American Highway, it has an international airport and rail connections to La Paz, Bolivia, and Tacna, Peru. In 2002, over 175 thousand people called Arica home.
The Port of Arica is administered by an independent company of the State of Chile, called Compania Portuaria Arica that was established by law in 1998. The company replaced the earlier Portuaria Compania de Chile with the mission of decentralizing port management, promoting competition, and opening the port to the private sector.
Antofagasta,
Antofagasta is a port city in northern Chile, about 700 miles (1,130 km) north of Santiago. It is the capital of both Antofagasta Province andAntofagasta Region. According to the 2002 census, the city has an urban population of 281,155 and a municipal population of 296,905.
The city’s name comes from either a Quechua or Aymara word for “town of the great saltpeter bed.” Antofagasta‘s economic development has been based on extraction of raw materials.
Antofagasta was formerly known as the main copper port of Chile, however, in recent years Mejillones have taken the leadership in copper transportation mainly due major infrastructure investment in that area (including a new port called “Megapuerto de Mejillones“).

Coquimbo
The Port of Coquimbo lies on the southern shores of Coquimbo Bay in central Chile on one of the best sheltered harbors in the country. Located on the Pan-American Highway, it is a commercial and trade hub.
With little rain and an average temperature of about 14°C (57°F), the Port of Coquimbo is a popular South American seacoast resort. In 2002, the city was home to about 148 thousand people, and almost 300 thousand people lived in the La Serena-Coquimbo metropolitan area.
The Port of Coquimbo is a fast-growing shipping and industrial center. Its well-protected harbor is the winter refuge for the Chilean navy, and the port is busy with a variety of cargoes that include cement, agricultural products, fertilizers, ores, and concentrates.

Punta Arenas,
Punta Arenas is the most prominent settlement on the Strait of Magellan. Due to its location and size it is sometimes considered the southernmost city in the world.
Punta Arenas is the third largest city in the entire Patagonian Region, after the more northerly Argentine cities of Neuquén and ComodoroRivadavia. In 2002, it had a population of 120,000. It is roughly 1418.4 km from the coast of Antarctica.

Puerto San Antonio,
Puerto San Antonio is Chile’s largest port and the busiest port on South America’s west coast. Located on the shores of central Chile, it is nearest the country’s capital, Santiago. In 2002, over 87 thousand people called Puerto San Antonio home.
In 2002, Puerto San Antonio reached a new high in cargo-handling when it moved over nine million tons of cargo. In 2003, the National Ministry of Goods reserved 101 hectares of land to the south of the port for the development of the harbor.
In 2005, the South Molo extension began. In 2006, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean identified Puerto San Antonio as the 8th major port in the region.
