Gas - a bridge to CO2-neutral transport

Oil and coal, the two fossil fuels that today power most of the planet’s industries, heat homes and get vehicles on the move, will dry up one day, although that day may be some time off yet. What is a more acute problem, however, is the emission of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, sulphur and particles from oil and coal.

For the transport industry, which is 97 per cent dependent on oil, the pressure is now on to find alternative fuels. One of the alternatives that many insiders regard as most promising is natural gas.

“Natural gas is one of several alternatives. And natural gas can be better than oil since it produces lower carbon dioxide emissions,” says Magnus Swahn, President of consultancy firm Conlogic which works on the development of sustainable logistics solutions.

Natural gas consists primarily of methane, which upon combustion releases 30 to 50 per cent less carbon dioxide than oil does and about 40 per cent less nitrogen oxide. And unlike oil, natural gas does not release sulphur, heavy metals or ash into the air.

Not all the Earth’s natural gas reserves have been fully charted, but those that have been discovered are very large compared with the planet’s known oil reserves.

A switch to natural gas in the transport industry could be one way out of oil dependency and would result in a considerably lower environmental impact.

“However, if combustion takes place with the Otto cycle’s poorer efficiency rating, this benefit is erased,” warns Magnus Swahn.

This is a fact about which Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer Volvo Trucks is fully aware.

“The diesel engine’s efficiency rating is a massive 30 to 40 percent higher than that of today’s gas-powered vehicles using spark plug technology according to the Otto cycle,” explains Lars Mårtensson, Environmental Director of Volvo Trucks.

Tougher competition demands smarter production

The truck industry is one example in the industrial sector that is becoming increasingly customer-driven, at least according to Volvo Trucks. The lifecycle of a truck model is admittedly still very long, about 10 to 20 years, but customer adaptations and individual variations are becoming increasingly common.

“We can see that a more segmented market is developing, in which fewer customers are satisfied with accepting a standard truck. Most of our customers influence the design so that the truck matches their individual requirements,” says Gunnar Eliasson who is market manager for the construction segment at Volvo Trucks in Europe.

Global competition is imposing tougher demands on companies’ ability to deliver new products to the market. “The race is heating up,” says Jeffrey Liker, world-renowned professor at the University of Michigan in the USA.

Jeffrey Liker is Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering and among his publications is the best-selling book “The Toyota Way”. In the course of his research he studied what makes the Japanese car manufacturer unique, and this in turn led him to an in-depth examination of the lean production method, where the focus is on deleting everything unnecessary from the development process and on cutting development lead time.

“Lifecycles for all products are being cut as competition powers ongoing development. Nobody wants to risk losing market shares,” he explains.

As the end-user enters the product development process, many traditionally technology-focused corporate cultures face major challenges.

“All companies say that they work close to their customers but far from all do so. Because it’s difficult,” he points out.

This approach requires time together with customers; it requires a method for identifying customer requirements and then transforming them into technical specifications.

Production of the new Volvo V60 starts

The first verification prototype of the new Volvo V60 sports wagon passed through the Torslanda factory back in January as part of the pre-series production process. Leading researcher in biological diversity and ecosystem services to receive the Volvo Environment Prize

The Volvo Environment Prize is an annual scientific award now presented for the 21st time. This year’s prizewinner has for many years been a leading light within research into biological diversity and especially how important it is for the functioning of ecosystem services. This concept has been widely acknowledged in recent years, perhaps mainly due to an international research program, Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, where Professor Mooney has played a leading role.

Ecosystem services are the functions of an ecosystem that in some ways benefit mankind. The most obvious are food or materials that most people recognize as delivered by ecosystems: wood, fish, fruit and vegetables or other things that we can more or less extract directly. But other functions are also of vital importance, such as pollinating insects or the cleansing of air, soil or water. One example is when oil released into the Gulf of Mexico earlier this year after the explosion of the BP oil-drilling rig, was digested by oil-consuming microorganisms. That was an example of the regulating function of an ecosystem. Another example is adjustment of the atmosphere’s chemical composition by the organisms in the biosphere.

“We take these functions for granted but they are exposed to great threat today,” says Harold Mooney. “Water is being polluted, soil is being degraded and biologically rich seas and forests are being depleted. This brings the risk that ecosystem services will increasingly fail to provide for and protect us.”

He is, however, optimistic about the future since awareness of the issue is increasing across the world. Harold Mooney has been active in the foundation of IPBES, Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, which, like the UN climate panel, IPCC, works to create scientific consensus and communication with decision-makers.
